Low latency protocol for transmission of measurement data from FPGA to Linux computer via 10 Gbps Ethernet link
نویسنده
چکیده
This paper presents FADE-10G – an integrated solution for modern multichannel measurement systems, aimed on low latency, reliable transmission of measurement data from FPGA based front-end electronic boards (FEBs) to computer based node in the Data Acquisition System (DAQ), using standard Ethernet 1 Gbps or 10 Gbps link. Additionally to transmission of data, the system allows to reliably send simple control commands from DAQ to FEB and receive responses. The aim of the work is to provide possibly simple base solution which can be adapted by the end user to his or her particular needs. Therefore emphasis is put on minimal consumption of FPGA resources in FEB and minimal CPU load in the DAQ computer. The open source implementation of the FPGA IP core and Linux kernel driver under permissive license facilitates modifications and reuse of the solution. The system has been successfully tested in real hardware, both with 1 Gbps and 10 Gbps links.

Efficient transmission of measurement data from FPGA to embedded system via Ethernet link
This paper presents a system consisting of the FPGA IP core, the simple network protocol and the Linux device driver, capable of efficient and reliable data transmission from a low resources FPGA chip to the Linux-based embedded computer system, via a private Ethernet network (consisting of a single segment or a few segments connected via an Ethernet switch). The embedded system may optionally ...
متن کاملOptimized Ethernet transmission of acquired data from FPGA to embedded system
This paper presents a simple system consisting of the FPGA core, network protocol and Linux kernel driver, aimed on efficient transmission of acquired data from the low resources FPGA equipped with Ethernet PHY to the embedded system, responsible for preprocessing of those data and sending them further via standard network links. The system has been optimized regarding the memory and logic cons...
متن کاملAnatomy of UDP and M-VIA for cluster communication
High interprocess communication latency is detrimental to parallel and grid computing. Over the years, the network bandwidth has increased rapidly while the end-to-end latency has not decreased much. This is because the latency is dominated by the protocol software execution time in the kernel instead of the raw transmission time over the link. In this paper, we perform an anatomical analysis o...
متن کاملVIA Communication Performance on a Gigabit Ethernet Cluster
As the technology for high-speed networks has evolved over the last decade, the interconnection of commodity computers (e.g., PCs and workstations) at gigabit rates has become a reality. However, the improved performance of high-speed networks has not been matched so far by a proportional improvement in the ability of the TCP/IP protocol stack. As a result the Virtual Interface Architecture (VI...
متن کاملLow Overhead Ethernet Communication for Open MPI on Linux Clusters
This paper describes the basic concepts of our solution to improve the performance of Ethernet Communication on a Linux Cluster environment by introducing Reliable Low Latency Ethernet Sockets. We show that about 25% of the socket latency can be saved by using our simplified protocol. Especially, we put emphasis on demonstrating that this performance benefit is able to speed up the MPI level co...
